The winner of both the USA and World championships in hurdle events, Lolo Jones has reached her current standing after a lot of struggle and immense patience. Jones experienced a tough childhood due to her being born to a single mother with a large family. Her mother was always moving around, and had even resided in a basement church for a short period of time. Jones was required to relocate to another school every during her high school years because of this nomadic existence. When she attended Theodore Roosevelt High School Jones lived apart from her mother to pursue her interests in the track and field events. She stayed in four homes during her time in high school so that she could attend all of her classes in the same place. Jones was a cellist with the school's orchestra, and winner of the Gatorade Iowa track and field award for athlete of the Year won her the Gatorade Iowa Athlete Award at the close of her high school career. Jones was one of the best hurdlers in her age group at the time she entered the college. In 2002, at the NCAA Track and Field Championships, she won the 100 meter hurdles. In addition, she was one of the runners-up team in the relay 100-meter event. Jones won both the indoor and outdoor hurdles events at the NCAA Championship in 2003. Jones had completed her studies in 2005, began to put in the effort for track. Jones took home the Torino Memorial in 2005, and also Ostrava and Heusden track events in the next year.

Brandt was born and raised in Cape Town in South Africa. Her family moved into Auckland New Zealand with her family when she was in her teens.
